The essence of assemblage is the process of creating something new from assorted ephemera. Collecting “found objects” from old toys to typewriters allows the artist to balance chance and deliberate choice. Unexpected mistakes lead to new ideas, juxtaposing fantasy with reality, past with present. Lewis’s queens, diplomats and warrior goddesses evoke women’s self-assertion, powers of resilience, and transformation in life and through art.
With totemic presence, pinched waists and pronounced breasts, their configurations are clearly but not crudely sexual. Lewis’s work includes Surreal elements, resulting in ambiguous images that challenge each of us to reconsider our perceptions of femininity.
